Intramuros is one of the most historic places in Metro Manila, and it’s an easy day trip if you live in the city.

Lunch first

Before we started exploring, we had lunch at Ilustrado, a restaurant inside Intramuros with a classic Filipino-Spanish setting.

Walking to Fort Santiago

From Ilustrado we walked through the old walled city to Fort Santiago. Along the way: old churches, stone walls, cobbled streets and kalesas. Walking is the best way to see it, because you notice small details you’d miss from a car.

Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and an umbrella. It gets very hot.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Fort Santiago has an entrance fee; bring cash.
