With so many tea lovers out there, an affordable tea set is hard to find. While searching online for a cheap one, we found a Japan surplus store in Tarlac, so we drove there.

Hanami Japan Surplus

The store, in Moncada, Tarlac, was much bigger than we expected. They sell tea sets, cabinets, paintings and a lot more, all from Japan.

Prices

Tea sets ranged from about ₱200 to ₱1,500, depending on the brand. We got ours for under ₱500. (These were the prices when we visited in early 2021.)

First brew

Back home we tried it out with peppermint tea: fresh peppermint leaves and hot water.

Tips for Japan surplus shopping

  • Give yourself time. These stores are huge and everything is one of a kind.
  • Check each piece for chips and cracks.
  • Bring a box and newspaper for anything fragile.
